What is wash and fold? It's a laundry service where someone else washes, dries and folds your everyday clothes, then hands them back ready to put away. You drop off a bag or have it picked up, and it comes back clean and folded, usually priced by the pound or by the bag.
The longer answer is what actually happens to your bag, how it's different from dry cleaning and a laundromat, and what to watch for the first time you try it.
What happens to your bag, step by step
Every service runs a little differently, but the basic path is the same. Here's how it looks with Foam, since that's the one we can speak for.
- You set your preferences once. Things like air dry, water temperature, cycle type, fold style and scent-free. You can also ask for colors and whites to be kept apart.
- You leave your bag out. On your pickup day, your bag goes outside your door. You don't need to be home.
- It gets washed and dried the way you asked. Your saved preferences are used every time, so you don't repeat yourself each week.
- It gets folded. Shirts, pants, towels and sheets come back folded and ready for a drawer or a shelf.
- It comes back to your door. Foam's turnaround is a 4 to 6 hour average, so a morning pickup is usually back the same day.
Along the way you get a text at each stage: pickup confirmed, washing, drying, folding, out for delivery and delivered. The last one comes with a photo of your bag at the door. It's a small thing, but it answers the "where's my stuff" question before you have to ask it.
How is wash and fold different from dry cleaning?
They solve different problems. Wash and fold is for the things you'd normally throw in your own washer: T-shirts, jeans, gym clothes, underwear, towels and sheets. Everything gets washed with water and detergent, dried, and folded.
Dry cleaning uses solvents instead of water. It's meant for clothes whose care label says dry clean, like many suits, structured blazers and some wool or silk pieces. Those usually come back on hangers, not folded.
If you're not sure which pile something belongs in, check the care label. Our guide to laundry symbols explains what each one means. We also wrote a longer guide to dry cleaning versus laundry if you want the details.
How is it different from a laundromat?
A laundromat rents you the machines. You bring the clothes, the detergent and the time, and you do the sorting, switching and folding yourself.
Wash and fold hands all of that off. Some laundromats offer drop-off wash and fold at the counter, which is the same idea without the pickup. A pickup service adds the trips on both ends, so you never carry the bag anywhere.
Neither one is wrong. If you like the routine, or you only need a load now and then, a laundromat works fine. Wash and fold makes more sense when the time is the part you're short on.
How is wash and fold usually priced?
There are two common ways.
By the pound. The service weighs your laundry and charges a rate per pound. It's simple, but your bill moves around week to week, and some places add a minimum.
By the bag. You pay a flat price for a bag up to a set weight. Foam works this way. The Essentials plan is $24.99 a week for one bag, up to 15 lbs. Two bags are $44.99 a week and three are $64.99. Pickup, washing, drying, folding and delivery are included, with no delivery fees. You can see the full breakdown on the laundry pickup cost page.
When you compare services, compare the same thing. A cheap per-pound rate can end up costing more once you add pickup fees, minimums or extras.
What to check in your first week
The first bag back tells you most of what you need to know. Here's what's worth a look before you settle in.
- Did they follow your instructions? If you asked for air dry or no fabric softener, check that it happened.
- Is everything there? Count the obvious stuff, like socks, work shirts and anything you'd miss.
- How does it fold? Folding style is personal. If it's not how you like it, say so once and see if it sticks.
- Do you know where your bag is? You shouldn't have to wonder whether it was picked up or delivered.
- What happens if something goes wrong? Find the policy before you need it, not after.
On that last one, Foam asks you to report a problem within a day of delivery and works with you on a fair credit or reimbursement. Anything that doesn't meet your standards gets re-washed, no questions asked.
A good service also feels the same every week. Foam assigns a team member to you long-term, and your preferences are saved, so week three should look like week one. If you're the type who has strong opinions about towels, that part matters more than any price.
